The Inspectorate of Electricity

The Inspectorate of Electricity comes into existence since the inception of the full-fledged State of Meghalaya on 21st January, 1972. It was created primarily for the administration of the Indian Electricity Act and Rules. It is technically and administratively manned by the Senior Electrical Inspector and assisted by the Inspector of Electricity, Assistant Electrical Inspector, Electrical Tester and Ministerial Staff.

The main objective of this Inspectorate is to strengthen the regulatory machinery of the state Government to arrest the trend of electrical accident so as to ensure public safety.

The works under the Indian Electricity Act and Rules are mostly technical and regulatory in nature. Inspection and testing are being carried out all the electrical installation throughout the state. The Inspectorate also rendered technical assistance to various Government Department where technical had is not available.

The objective of the Inspectorate of Electricity is to implement and administer the following Acts, Rules and Regulations:

  • Provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003 and the Central Electricity Authority (Measures Relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulation 2010, made under the Act.
  • Provisions of the Meghalaya Cinema (Regulation) Rules, 1990.
  • Provisions of the Meghalaya Electrical Licensing Board Regulations, 1973.
  • Provisions of the Energy Conservation Act 2001.

The Inspectorate of Electricity has jurisdiction throughout the state, excluding the works belonging to Defense, Railways and Central Government installations.
